So I finally finished typing up the handwritten draft I wrote last year. My first draft is officially complete, and my word count clocks in at an almighty…
29 598 words?
I was sure it would be more than that! This bare bones draft is so bare bones it’s not even bones! Its like, maybe a few blobs of marrow and a couple of chunks of cartilage!
So I guess I have a lot of work to do. Still, I have a base to build on. I’ve just reached an uncomfortable point where I can no longer make the excuse of, “it’s a first draft so it doesn’t matter if it’s half-baked and shitty”. I have to start filling in all those plot details, flesh out all those characters. I have to start actually forming decent sentences and paragraphs, instead of just saying, “and then they did the thing and it was good”.
That’s all easier said than done, and it’s starting to feel a little daunting. But it’s exciting at the same time. I want to have the manuscript polished and ready to submit to places by the end of the year. Barring any major illness or disaster (or really distracting video game), I think I can do it!
Wish me luck!
